Edit H.265/HEVC files in Lightworks (Free and Pro)

Nowadays, more and more camera uses the H.265/HEVC codec to pack a lot of image data into a super small file size (about 5x smaller than that of H.264). After the shooting, the really head-scratching issue is that this new codec has poor compatibility with video editing software and even include most professional NLE editing software such as Lightworks. A lot of users in Lightworks forums the current Lightworks version lacks the ability to handle H.265/HEVC codec, they are waiting for an update with native support.

"Hello all, I just wanted to ask developers if we can see H.265 support in Lightworks in the future versions? It is becoming standard now, so... we are waiting! "

"We would LOVE to be able to bring the HEVC (H.265) files directly into LW Pro without having to transcode them. There's no doubt that H.265 is going to get big fairly soon, So how about Lightworks' native support for HEVC (H.265)?"

To fix the codec incompatible issue, you will definitely need to perform a codec transcoding process. Although transcoding may be not a good solution, however, as H.265 is even less friendly than H.264. 4x the picture information compressed into the same size file as HD in H.264 means 4x the processing power needed to reconstruct it on a frame by frame basis in real time. So it is very likely to require a significantly more powerful editing workstation to handle it. The higher the compression, the more juice it takes to decompress for frame accurate editing.

The good news is that you can transcode H.265/HEVC to Lightworks other workable file formats listed below:
- DVCAM / DVCPRO 25, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD

- IMX 30, 40, 50
- AVCHD (M2T, M2TS, MPEG4, H.264)
- Avid DNxHD - all variants, including Thin Raster**
